Shine a Light Project
At PSO, we see ourselves as more than just a utility company. We view our community as more than just our customers.
That’s why we’re always seeking ways to make a difference in our neighbors’ lives. The Shine a Light Project partners with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma to provide assistance to families in need.
Shining a Light on Food Insecurity
Since 2014, the Shine a Light Project has partnered with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma to help families in need lighten their financial load. Here’s how it works: Each year PSO donates energy-efficient LED light bulbs to our food bank partners to help families save money on their utility bills — money they could use to help feed their families.
What Are the Benefits?
Serves Our Community
More than 40% of Oklahomans who rely on food pantries for basic groceries report they have to choose between paying their bills and feeding their families.
Fights Food Insecurity
A food bank representative explains, “Food insecurity isn’t something that happens to a family in isolation, it’s often part of a larger constellation of issues impacting poverty and health.” The partnership between the food banks and PSO takes those issues into consideration and helps reduce costs for the families both companies serve.
Providing a Ray of Hope for Oklahomans in Need
PSO has donated over 750,000 energy-efficient bulbs since 2014. The amount of energy saved from this program has reached approximately 16 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually — the equivalent to the total energy use of over 1,200 homes.
