Pioneering Efficiency in Higher Education: OSU-Tulsa

Business Lighting and Electronics

On January 1, 1999, OSU-Tulsa brought the pioneering spirit of Oklahoma State University to the heart of downtown Tulsa. From that fateful first day, the OSU-affiliated institution has grown from 1,187 students to a headcount of more than 3,000.

A model of urban higher education, the innovative campus includes two large academic halls, the Greenwood Cultural Center and the 123,000-squarefoot Helmerich Research Center. The Center is home to high-tech laboratories, clean rooms, an imaging suite and cutting-edge IT capabilities.

Blazing New Trails of Efficiency

With a rapidly growing student population, the OSU-Tulsa campus was a prime candidate for a lighting retrofit. Working in conjunction with PSO efficiency experts, the campus completed a groundbreaking lighting project in five of its largest buildings and all of its outdoor lighting.

Fixtures containing full-wattage T8 lamps and early-generation electronic ballasts were retrofitted with reduced-wattage 25w T8 lamps and high-efficiency premium electronic ballasts. In addition to reducing energy use, efficient lamps and electronic ballasts offer numerous advantages, including superior color; elimination of flickering; and cooler, quieter operation.

Pushing the Frontiers of Urban Energy Savings

Working in consultation with PSO and Johnson Controls, the OSU-Tulsa campus achieved extraordinary results. The institution eliminated nearly 3 megawatts from its electrical infrastructure and more than 1.04 million kilowatt-hours of energy use per year.

Savings Summary

Annual energy savings: 1,043,655 kWh

Estimated annual energy cost savings: $62,600

Rebates paid by PSO: $260,134 — the largest PSO rebate check ever issued
